	Many people probably believe that sex toys were invented during the sexual revolution of the 60's. Nothing could be further from the truth! Sex toys have been around for thousands of years, and their exact point of origin has long since become shrouded in the mists of time. The first recorded sex toys were naturally dildos. In their earliest forms they were rather crude by comparison to the sillicone and vinyl dildos of today. In the late 19th century the first electric vibrators were produced. These were actually used by doctors to treat women for hysteria. That's right ladies, when life got on top of you off you went to the doctors so he could relieve your anxiety by massaging your vaginal lips and inducing "paroxysm", better known to you and I as an orgasm! The vibrator revolutionised this treatment saving the doctors valuable time by automating a process they previously had to perform manually.

As time went on vibrators were marketed to the domestic market in respectable magazines and publications. An advertisement ill a 1921 issue of Hearst�s magazine urged men to buy the devices for their wives as Christmas gifts to keep them "young and pretty" and free from the scourge of hysteria.


	This popular hey-day did not last. In the 20's and 30's blue movies showing the unvarnished use of these vibrators began to appear in adult movie theatres. Once it became clear that there was a far more sexual side to the massaging properties of vibrators, they gradually disappeared from view.

	Vibrators Today In the last 30 years, sex toys have very much come back into view. They burst back onto the scene in the 70's amid a flurry of sub standard products and sexist male-orientated advertising. However, things began to gradually improve during the 80's and 90's, and today there's a whole host of products designed and marketed for women. In fact, the use of sex toys is now so acceptable that there are regular articles in respected publications. Women's magazines such as cosmo mean that women are now firmly in the driving seat when it comes to their sexuality.
